Time and Space for Writing

How to Create Time and Space for Writing

Lack of Time and Space for writing is one of the biggest pitfalls for anyone pursuing a writing, self-publishing and/or content marketing project.  Therefore this article provides some tips on how to create time and space for writing your articles, essays and book.

Tip No 1.  Start with Creating Your Dedicated Space

Firstly, one of the biggest challenges for a creative project is finding dedicated space.

Obviously, it gets messy when you have to keep moving your stuff off the kitchen or dining room table at the end of the day.  Consequently, you’ll quickly tire of this.  And give up.

Also, another issue with moving your stuff daily is that you forget where you are in your work. Especially as most of us have so much to remember as it is.

Therefore, it is best to create a dedicated work area.  So, if you’re lucky enough to have a spare room in your home, turn it into your writing room or home office.

On the other hand, if you don’t have a spare room, you’ll have to get creative.  Possibly you can transform a corner of a room into your dedicated, exclusive workspace.  Above all, divide it off to give yourself privacy (and to hide any clutter on your desk).

For instance, some ideas for privacy screens include portable folding screens (see image below left).

Or you could divide the room off with a curtain rail and a curtain.

However, if you are renting or don’t want to screw a curtain rail to your wall, you’ll have to get really creative to set up a free-standing structure.

For example, you could use cafe curtain rods, with grow tent joiners, and lightweight shower curtains (see image below right).

So, now that you have the space sorted, let’s create more time.  Furthermore, we know we only have a limited amount of time in each day, week, month and year.  Likewise, you probably believe that it’s impossible to “create more time”.

However, I can guarantee you waste more time than you realize.  So if you’re serious about creating more time and space for writing, then bear with me.

Tip No. 2 – Manage and Keep Track of Your Time

Firstly, to create more time, start tracking how you spend your time.  Possibly you know there are plenty of apps available to help you with this.  Alternatively, you could download our manual Time Tracker for free

To clarify, tracking time gives you insight into areas where you are being non-productive.  In other words, where you fritter time away.  For example, wasting time on social media, or binge watching on streaming services (we’re all guilty of that!).

Furthermore, using a time tracker also helps you to discover ways to delegate tasks to others.  Certainly, this is the perfect way to create more time and space for writing.

Most importantly, you don’t have to do all the domestic chores, or run yourself ragged caring for others.  But what if you encourage them to take ownership and responsibility for their stuff?

Most likely you’ll have your time freed up almost instantly!

Tip No. 3 – Our Best Time and Space for Writing Tip

Of course, we are saving our best time and space for writing tip until last.  Best of all, it’s one that has stood the test of time, and is used by all successful people.  So, are you ready?

Ultimately, you need to schedule time for working on your writing every day.

Therefore, if you’re serious about achieving your goal, establish a routine where you get up and write first thing in the morning.

Even if it means going to bed earlier, and getting up earlier.  Most importantly, work with the door or curtain closed on your space.  And… just… do… it!

In conclusion, put a time limit on your morning writing time.  Even if it’s just 30 minutes a day, you’ll start making progress.  As a result, over time your writing skills will improve.

Furthermore, your ideas will flow easier.  Best of all, the rough writing diamonds in your mine will grow in quantity.  Consequently, you’ll have a pipeline full of valuable ideas for writing.
